Spring Service Day and Library Rescue, this Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the school. Many hands make light work! This is a fantastic way to fulfill service requirements and feel a part of our school community. Bring the entire family for any or all of that time to help clean windows, wash chairs and tables, work on the grounds, serve in our “Library Rescue Project” (cataloging donated books in the upstairs library), etc. Bring gloves, shovels, bark rakes, brooms, and spades. We are blessed with a beautiful school and many devoted families who help keep it that way!

Your Mom is one the most important women in your life. So this Mother’s Day, treat her to a surprise celebration. Here are some heartfelt and affordable ways to honor the upcoming Mother’s Day that are other than the classic bouquet of flowers or box of chocolates.

1. Classic Game Night
For a great group activity, invite family over for a night of backgammon, Scrabble, chess, and Yahtzee. Mom will love having the house full of laughter and teasing again.

2.Family Traditions
Spend the day with Mom and learn how to make all those dishes that she cooks so well. Meat loaf, fried chicken, spaghetti… learn all the subtle secrets of pinches and smidgens to cook like the pro.

3.Memory Lane
Bring over new photo albums and scrapbooks to start going through Mom’s old pictures with her. As you put the books together, you’ll create new lifelong memories while listening to her retell old stories.

4.Afternoon Gardening
Head outside with your green thumbs for the day. Bring plants and tools to get dirty while planting with your mom. Every day after, she will smile as she looks out over her new blooms of bougainvillea or roses.

5. Help Around The House
Dedicate the day to helping Mom with all the items on her at-home to-do list. Whether you’re changing the printer’s ink cartridge, cleaning out the garage or taking old clothes to Deseret Industries or Goodwill, your mom will be endlessly thankful that you came over to lend a hand and spend quality time.

If he sees these qualities in a prospective school, he has chosen the best one that can meet his needs.

1. Any adult student should be provided the support and security that he needs from his choice of adult education provider. It must offer a learning environment where in his personal needs are met. At the same time, it must be a school where in which his existing abilities and skills are recognized.

2. Professors of adult education must consider and treat their students purely as such, but also as peers. This gives them the respect that they deserve, being wise and experienced adults. During classes, professors must listen and consider the opinions of their students. This is one way of fostering intellectual freedom; while at the same time, creativity and experimentation are fully encouraged.

3. The ideal adult education assures the option of open paced learning. If such a choice is afforded to a student, this will challenge him to go beyond his level of learning skills and abilities. It has been known that if adult students are pushed too much to study, they easily give up. On the other hand, if the challenge is easy, they become disinterested and bored. Adults who are engaged in open pace learning experience are immersed in intellectual stimulation, allowing them to grow more.

4. A student must consider an adult education that fosters his active participation in the offered learning activities. Becoming a participant in learning allows him to absorb new knowledge and skill easily, compared to being just a passive listener to lectures. In an adult education, the ideal setting is for the instructor to engage his students in a lively conversation or even a debate. As both parties interact, they are prone to trying out new and radical ideas. They become involved in the use of exercises and activities to prove theories and facts.

5. Finally, an adult student is encouraged by his adult education provider to give feedback and comments about lessons and activities that he is engaged in. The best adult education has feedback means in place. This is intended for the student to be able to inform his professor on what truly works for him. The ability to give feedback helps an adult student to express what he need and would like more to learn.

Marian Mathew has a great interest in running an institution which supports family values. One of the few people who inspire her in putting such institution is Ken Von Kohorn, who has established an organization that focus on moral aspects of families.

Items we take for granted on a daily basis can be used to increase the success of a homeschooling student. Information is literally at our fingertips as technology is available to lay the groundwork for knowledge and education. There are several ways that we can put this technology to work in order to enhance the educational experience.

1. Smartphone - More than 4 billion smartphones are in circulation around the globe. Since there are only slightly more than 7 billion people on the planet, the odds are pretty good that you or your child has one of these miracle machines. Did you know that there are a variety of free and retail apps available for these devices covering every aspect of education? If there is a subject, there is almost certainly an app for it. These can be used as exam helpers, practice applications, or mobile learning units if you have to take your homeschooling on the road.

2. Tablets - Like the smartphones, tablets have apps available with one important detail. These are usually far larger than the smartphone providing a better view of the material. Tablets are more realistic when it comes to education because of their larger screens. The same apps can be installed on these devices reducing the need for books and printed materials. Entire encyclopedias can be downloaded and installed in minutes. Books covering a wide range of topics can be purchased digitally and your student could be reading the content near immediately. There is no need to wait for the mailman to bring you a purchased book if you simply download it.

3. Television - If you have a television in the home purchased in the last couple of years, there is a good chance it has HDMI. Did you know that you can plug a tablet into a television in order to use it as the display? The same content you have on your tablet can be projected onto your larger television screen. It may even be possible to connect your computer system to your television as well in order to display the larger content which is great if you are homeschooling more than one child.

4. Streaming Media - Services such as Netflix are loaded with historical documentaries and science specials directly from Discovery and History Channel. These are an excellent aid for assisting in studies regarding history and science respectively. They are also a credible source that you don’t have to speculate on the nature or fact of the content. Although there are some credible sources on YouTube and Vimeo, there are also a vast range of conspiracy and falsified information within the likes of these media outlets.

5. Cloud-based Apps - There is a wide variety of cloud-based apps you could use to enhance the learning experience of your homeschooling student. Mindmapping applications can help a student branch what a specific subject could entail, time keeping apps could display the efficiency of time for your student, calendar apps could help keep the days and tasks organized, and management systems such as Moodle can help you develop a real online school presence private for your homeschooling students.

Homeschooling doesn’t have to be a mundane chore in today’s world. Sitting at the kitchen table and reading from books can be replaced by gathering far more information from a variety of sources sitting at the desk using the Internet. Technology in the home can be used for more than just entertainment purposes if you have an open mind to the idea of exploring the device’s capabilities.
